PM Narendra Modi Warns of Massive Global Poverty Amid West Asia War and Energy Crisis; Flags Current Era as 'Decade of Disasters'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a stark warning regarding the global economy, stating that decades of progress against poverty could be undone if cascading global crises are not urgently reversed. Addressing the Indian diaspora in The Hague on Saturday, PM Narendra Modi  described the current era as a "decade of disasters" driven by the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, escalating wars in West Asia, and a severe international energy crisis.

The Prime Minister’s address came during the second leg of his five-nation European tour, coinciding with major geopolitical instability following recent military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel. Prime Minister emphasised that a very large section of the global population risks being pushed back into poverty unless international conditions change swiftly. 'Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan': BJP Launches Nationwide Campaign for Fuel Conservation and Simpler Lifestyle Following PM Narendra Modi’s Appeal.

Global Economic Challenges and Poverty Risks

During his speech to the community event, PM Narendra Modi highlighted the compounding nature of recent global disruptions. He noted that the world is being forced to confront one major challenge after another, leaving little time for economic recovery between crises.

The Prime Minister stressed that while India’s domestic successes traditionally benefit wider humanity, the current international environment presents unprecedented hurdles. He warned that the financial and structural achievements gained by developing nations over past decades are now facing immediate jeopardy due to prolonged geopolitical conflicts.

India Netherlands Strategic Supply Chain Partnership

In response to these global vulnerabilities, Mr Modi focused on the shifting priorities of international trade. He stated that the modern global circumstance requires the urgent development of resilient logistics networks to withstand geopolitical shocks.

To address these vulnerabilities, India and the Netherlands are actively collaborating to build trusted, transparent, and future-ready supply chains. The partnership aims to diversify trade routes and reduce dependency on volatile regions, specifically targeting sectors like technology and energy manufacturing to ensure long-term economic stability.

Domestic Fuel Price Hike and Inflationary Impact

The warnings in Europe follow a series of significant economic developments within India. On Friday, state-owned oil marketing companies raised retail petrol and diesel prices by three rupees per litre, ending a four-year freeze. The price revision saw petrol rise to INR 97.77 per litre and diesel to INR 90.67 per litre in Delhi, with higher rates applied across other states due to local levies.

Market analysts and industry leaders have warned that the fuel price increase will trigger broader inflationary pressures across the Indian economy through July and August 2026. The rising cost of fuel is expected to increase freight rates, agricultural input costs, and manufacturing expenses, impacting everyday household budgets.

Government Calls for Voluntary Austerity Measures

Prior to departing for his European tour, PM Narendra Modi had delivered a speech in Hyderabad urging citizens to adopt voluntary austerity measures to conserve foreign exchange reserves. He encouraged those who can to work from home, reduce overseas travel, and limit gold purchases to cushion the economy against external shocks. PM Narendra Modi To Visit Sweden Today During Third Leg of Ongoing Five-Nation Tour.

The government has framed fuel conservation as an act of patriotism, promoting the use of public transport and carpooling. Drawing parallels to the behavioural adaptations seen during the coronavirus pandemic, the administration views remote work and reduced consumption as necessary short-term demand management tools to navigate the ongoing West Asian energy crisis.
