Bhopal, January 7: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and Former State Minister Gopal Bhargav was elected as the leader of opposition in Madhya Pradesh assembly. The decision was taken in a BJP legislature meeting. Home Minister Rajnath Singh and state in-charge Vinay Sahastrabudhe were also present in the meeting. After former chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan decided not to contest for the post, Bhargav and Narotam Mishra were in the race for the post of LoP. According to reports, Chohan had a meeting with Amit Shah, Singh, Sushma Swaraj and other leaders in Delhi before Bhargav was elected as the leader of the opposition. After Bhargav’s election as the LoP, rumours are rife that Chouhan may be assigned a central role if the party comes to power again post the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

In the recent assembly elections, Congress emerged victorious with 114 seats, overthrowing 15 years of BJP rule in the state. Meanwhile, the BJP managed to bag 109 seats. Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath took oath as the CM of the state on December 14. The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) which won two seats in the assembly election also extended support to the Congress.
