People’s Tribunal on SIR in Bengaluru
The People’s Tribunal is being organised with the participation of civil society groups from across Karnataka. The organisers are expected to hear from people who claim they were wrongly removed from the electoral rolls during the SIR exercise.
CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka said the party would interact with Kannadigas who have allegedly been affected by the revision of electoral rolls. The group has demanded that deletions made during the SIR process be scrapped and that the earlier electoral rolls be restored.
Prakash Raj has also urged people to attend the tribunal, saying that people allegedly affected by SIR from different districts of Karnataka would be present at Freedom Park. Abhijeet Dipke Warns of Nationwide Protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10 if CEC Gyanesh Kumar Doesn’t Resign.
Abhijeet Dipke, Dhruv Rathee to Attend
Abhijeet Dipke, who founded the CJP, is scheduled to attend the Bengaluru programme along with party spokesperson Saurav Das and co-convener Ashutosh Ranka.
Dhruv Rathee is also expected to attend. Prakash Raj announced Rathee as the ‘special guest’ for the Bengaluru event in a video shared on social media, after earlier asking people to join the protest. Rathee subsequently confirmed his participation.
Actor Prakash Raj and representatives of youth and civil society organisations are also expected to participate in the programme.
CJP’s Demands Over SIR, Gyanesh Kumar
The Bengaluru programme is part of CJP’s wider campaign against the SIR exercise and the Election Commission. The group has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a freeze on the SIR process, restoration of the January 2025 voters’ list and an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities.
The People’s Tribunal will be followed by a ‘Chappal protest’ organised by the CJP at Freedom Park. According to the party, the protest will focus on women’s safety while also continuing its campaign against the SIR exercise.
The Bengaluru mobilisation comes ahead of a larger protest planned by the CJP and student organisations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10. The groups have said they will continue raising concerns over voter-list revisions and electoral reforms.
