Dakshin Kannada, August 10: Former Union Minister and Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary was rescued from his house in flood-affected Dakshin Kannada district of Karnataka on Saturday. Janardhana Poojary was reportedly trapped in his house after heavy rains caused a flood in several parts of Karnataka. A video of the rescue operation to bring Janardhana Poojary to a safer location also surfaced.

The Dakshina Kannada district administration sent a boat along with a rescue team to evacuate Poojary who was trapped in his house in flood-affected Bantwal. In the video, a rescue team is seen bringing the former union minister to a safer location. Around 1024 villages in 80 talukas of 17 districts have been affected due to the floods caused by incessant rains in the region, said Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa at a press conference. Karnataka Rains: 24 Dead, Flood Situation Remains Grim.

Former Union Minister Janardhana Poojary Rescued:

The chief minister also announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to next of kin of people who lost their lives in the floods that have crippled the state. "So far, 24 people have lost their lives due to the floods. Compensation of Rs 5 lakh will be given to the next of kin of the deceased," he told reporters. Several teams of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army and Navy are carrying out rescue operations across the state. Karnataka Rains: Red Alert Issued in Dakshina Kannada for Two Days. 

Earlier today, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who represents Karnataka also visited the flood-affected areas in Belgaum. Meanwhile, all schools and colleges – both government and private – in affected flood-hit districts will remain closed till August 15. All Konkan Railway trains were also cancelled after a landslide occurred near Karwar area.
