Clashes broke out in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Thursday during the first phase of polling, as supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir engaged in violent confrontations. The skirmishes involved stone-pelting and physical assaults with lathis, resulting in damage to several vehicles parked near the polling sites. The tension escalated in the Nowda area following reports of crude bombs being hurled late Wednesday night. Humayun Kabir, a former TMC leader who now leads the AJUP, staged a sit-in protest on Thursday morning. He alleged that local police had lathi-charged his supporters overnight and demanded the immediate removal of the officer-in-charge. Kabir further urged the Election Commission (EC) to take stringent action against TMC workers, whom he accused of threatening his followers.

Security forces were quickly deployed to the scene to disperse the crowds and restore order. While police utilized a mild lathi charge to control the situation, they maintained that the environment remained under control. The Election Commission has since sought a detailed report from the District Magistrate and District Election Officer regarding the unrest. The violence occurs as West Bengal begins a high-stakes assembly election across 294 seats, with the TMC seeking a fourth term against a challenging surge from the BJP.
