Mumbai, October 10: The Naigaon Vidhan Sabha election in Maharashtra will witness a direct fight between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Congress reposed faith in its sitting MLA from Naigaon assembly seat Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan, whereas the BJP fielded Rajesh Sambhaji Pawar who faced defeat in the previous election. The Congress is contesting in an alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Similarly, the BJP has tied up with the Shiv Sena. For the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, the Congress and the NCP decided to contest 125 seats each. The BJP has 164 of the 288 seats, whereas the Shiv Sena is fighting on 124 seats, according to the seat-sharing deal finalised by the two parties. In the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP came to power winning 122 seats in Maharashtra assembly elections. The Shiv Sena, which broke alliance with BJP ahead of polls, managed to bag 63 seats. The Congress and the NCP contested polls separately and won 42 and 41 seats respectively. According to the Election Commission’s schedule for Maharashtra assembly elections, polling will be held on October 21. Nearly 9 crore voters are expected to exercise their franchise. The counting of votes will take place on October 24 and the results will be declared on the same day. The term of Maharashtra assembly ends on November 9.
