The BJP on Tuesday announced Hasirani Rath, mother of slain West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s former personal assistant Chandranath Rath, as its candidate for the upcoming Nandigram Assembly bypoll. The party also named former Murshidabad district president Sakharav Sarkar as its candidate for Rejinagar, setting up two closely watched contests in the state.

Hasirani Rath to contest from Nandigram

Hasirani Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, a close aide of Adhikari who was shot dead in May, shortly after the BJP's victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The killing is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The BJP's decision to field Rath's mother adds a personal dimension to the Nandigram contest. Suvendu Adhikari PA Murder Case: CBI Arrests Alleged Main Shooter Rajkumar in Chandranath Rath Murder From Muzaffarnagar.

Hasirani is expected to file her nomination papers in Haldia on Tuesday, with Adhikari likely to accompany her, according to reports. She has expressed confidence about contesting the seat and said she is ready to work for the people of Nandigram.

Why Nandigram seat is vacant

The Nandigram seat fell vacant after Adhikari won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 Assembly election and subsequently retained Bhabanipur. Chandranath Rath Killed: Suvendu Adhikari’s Aide Shot Dead in Bengal’s Madhyamgram; Another Critically Injured.

Nandigram has long been a politically significant constituency in West Bengal and has been closely associated with Adhikari's political career. The upcoming bypoll is therefore being watched as an early test of the BJP's position in the constituency following the Assembly election.

BJP picks Sakharav Sarkar for Rejinagar

For Rejinagar, the BJP has selected Sakharav Sarkar, a former president of the party's Murshidabad district unit who currently serves on its state committee. The Rejinagar seat became vacant after Humayun Kabir, founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, won both Rejinagar and Nowda and had to give up one seat.

Contest takes shape amid TMC factional dispute

The BJP's announcement comes amid an internal dispute within the Trinamool Congress, with rival factions preparing to contest the bypolls. One TMC faction has announced Sanchita Pradhan (Dey) for Nandigram and Rabiul Alam Chowdhury for Rejinagar. A rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has also announced candidates for the two constituencies.

The Election Commission is expected to rule on the competing claims over the TMC's identity and election symbol, adding another layer of uncertainty to the contests.

Voting on October 6

The Nandigram and Rejinagar bypolls are scheduled for October 6, with counting and results expected on October 9. With the BJP, rival TMC factions and other parties preparing for the contests, both seats are likely to attract significant political attention as campaigning gathers pace in the coming weeks.
