Who Is VD Satheesan? Congress Picks New Kerala CM
After days of suspense, endless speculation and high-voltage lobbying stretching from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi, the Congress high command finally picked V.D. Satheesan as Kerala’s 13th Chief Minister, marking what many within the party describe as the formal arrival of a new generation at the helm of Kerala politics.
After days of intense discussions and political lobbying between Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi, the Indian National Congress has chosen VD Satheesan as Kerala’s 13th Chief Minister, marking a major leadership shift within the party’s state unit. The announcement was made in Delhi by senior Congress leaders Deepa Dasmunshi, Mukul Wasnik and Ajay Maken after prolonged consultations involving the party’s central leadership.
The decision came after days of speculation over who would lead the Congress government in Kerala. Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal, who remained in Delhi during the final phase of discussions, was called for a meeting with Rahul Gandhi before the leadership choice was communicated internally. Who Is VD Satheesan?
Satheesan, who was born in Kochi district and turns 62 later this month, began his political career after training as a lawyer. He entered the Kerala Assembly from Paravur in 2001 and quickly gained attention for his debating skills and aggressive interventions inside the Assembly.
Known for combining statistics, sarcasm and sharp political attacks, Satheesan became one of the Congress party’s most visible voices against the Left government. Over the years, he built his image less through factional politics and more through legislative performance and organisational work. Rise After 2021 Election Defeat
Satheesan’s biggest political breakthrough came after the Congress-led United Democratic Front suffered a major defeat in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections. At the time, he was unexpectedly chosen as Leader of the Opposition, with some party leaders initially viewing him as a compromise candidate amid internal factional tensions.
However, Satheesan used the position to strengthen his public profile and emerge as the leading face of anti-Left politics in Kerala. He aggressively targeted the government of outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on issues including the gold smuggling case, AI camera controversy and law-and-order matters.
Seen as Face of Generational Change
Unlike several senior Congress leaders in Kerala, Satheesan was never considered closely aligned with either the traditional “A” or “I” faction camps that shaped the party’s state politics for decades. That relative independence helped him attract support among younger legislators and grassroots workers seeking generational change within the party.
While critics within Congress have accused him of centralising decision-making and moving too aggressively on political matters, even rivals acknowledge his strong public connect and communication skills.
On Wednesday morning, Satheesan travelled with his family to Thiruvananthapuram and arrived at his official residence, where supporters had already gathered anticipating the announcement. He reportedly entered the residence without addressing the crowd shortly before the All India Congress Committee formally announced his elevation.
As Satheesan prepares to move from the Opposition benches to the Chief Minister’s office, his leadership is being seen as a broader attempt by Congress to reposition itself in Kerala with a younger and more media-focused political approach.
His appointment also signals the party’s effort to challenge the political legacy built over the years by Pinarayi Vijayan and the ruling Left Democratic Front in the state.
