Mumbai, June 20: The Mumbai railway authority has decided to run special trains to carry muck collected from the railway tracks now on daily basis. Earlier such trains were run occasionally. According to a news report in the Mumbai Mirror, the officials confirmed and said that they have decided to take the initiative more frequently to make the track garbage free. Rodents on tracks, food items, plastic wrappers, etc. are a common sight, but even after repeated warnings, people continue to litter the railway premises, therefore to control the menace the Mumbai railway authority has come up with this idea.(Northern Indian Railways Use WhatsApp Groups to Track Cleanliness of Trains)

The report further mentions the move has come after the centre pushing on a clean and hygienic environment at railway stations under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, introduced by PM Modi- led BJP government.

Under the drive, four trains will run on the central route between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Maharaj (CSTM) to Kalyan. While on the western line, five trains will run between Churchgate to Virar every day. Furthermore, to avoid any inconvenience to the commuters the railways has decided to run these trains only in the wee hours.

Meanwhile, the railway authorities accused the Brihanmumnbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for not carrying out the cleaning work properly. The officials in a press conference held earlier raised fingers on BMC saying that due to the civic body's inefficiency, the authority has been facing significant challenges. "The garbage is dumped by the authorised or unauthorised units dwelling alongside the tracks, which is posing a challenge before us. No one needs to tell whose responsibility it is. It’s our collective responsibility to keep our surroundings clean. But we are doing our job and running four muck special trains every day," said General Manager of Central Railway, D K Sharma.

Another CR official said the garbage dumped along the tracks not only defaces the railways but also clogs the drainage lines, which ultimately leads to water-logging during the monsoon.
