Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that the newly approved Samudra Manthan scheme will help India save around Rs 1 lakh crore annually on energy imports. Describing the Cabinet decision as a revolutionary step, the government aims to significantly reduce the nation's heavy reliance on imported crude oil and natural gas.

As per a ANI report, India currently spends approximately USD 150 billion every year on hydrocarbon imports. Speaking in Uttar Pradesh, Puri highlighted that fast-paced economic growth has driven domestic energy consumption to three times the global average, making expanded domestic exploration an urgent national priority. Census 2027 Self-Enumeration Begins in West Bengal: How To Apply Online, Last Date and Key Details.

Boosting Domestic Offshore Exploration

The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 84,084 crore Samudra Manthan National Offshore Exploration Scheme to scale up domestic production across deepwater and ultra-deepwater sedimentary basins. The four-year roadmap focuses on large-scale seismic data acquisition, exploratory drilling, and the creation of common offshore infrastructure.

By opening up vast offshore sectors that were previously restricted, the program seeks to de-risk investments and encourage state-run and private energy players. Industry experts note that comprehensive seabed mapping and advanced technological deployments will help convert complex geological potential into viable commercial discoveries.

Achieving Long-Term Energy Self-Reliance

Puri expressed strong confidence that the comprehensive initiative will successfully drive India toward energy self-reliance, or 'aatmanirbhar' status. With domestic fields facing natural production declines, the multi-billion-rupee push is designed to secure long-term macroeconomic stability and insulate the domestic economy from international supply shocks. Sanatan Dharma Insult Row: FIRs Against Rahul Gandhi, Pappu Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav Over Parliament Skit.

The strategic rollout forms a cornerstone of India's broader energy security framework. By unlocking untapped offshore hydrocarbon reserves and fostering local manufacturing capabilities, the government expects to curb foreign exchange outflows and protect consumers from volatile global fuel markets.
