Gowri Habba is a Hindu festival celebrated a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. It is observed by married women in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. While the day is known as Gowri Habba in South India, the observance is called Hartalika Teej in the north. On this day, women pray to Goddess Gowri, who is the companion of Lord Shiva. Goddess Gowri, the incarnation of Aadhi Shakthi Mahamaya, is the mother of Lord Ganesha. Women observe a Gowri Habba fast and worship the idol of Jalagauri or Arishinadagauri, which is a symbolic idol of Gowri made with turmeric.
