Nauvari Saree

No other outfit can make you look more graceful and elegant than a Nauvari saree on Gudi Padwa. Nauvari saree, also known as kaashtha is a traditional Maharashtrian saree draping style. The saree is nine-yard long and hence called nau (nine) – vari saree. However, draping the Nauvari saree can be complicated. Instead, opt for a ready-to-wear Nauvari. This is simple and easy to wear as you need not worry about the drapes. You can wear it like denims. Fabric plays an important role when selecting a ready-to-wear Nauvari. To avoid looking plump, always go for a pure silk or a soft cotton fabric.

To give you the ethereal and conventional look, adorn yourself with Maharashtrian jewellery. A nathani (nose ring) is a must to get the look right. Other accessories include lots of green and gold bangles, earrings, thushi (small necklace) and a big necklace and you’re ready to go. If you don’t have traditional jewellery, you can wear the ones you own. If you plan on buying, purchase imitation jewellery that will go easy on your pocket plus you will achieve the look you want.

Hairstyle

You do not need to for an extravagant hair do. You can leave it open if you like. But since we are going all authentic, it’s best if you tied your hair in sleek and clean bun. To add that extra oomph, decorate your hair with gajras (flower garlands). If you need a more elegant hair do to go with your Marathi attire, try a traditional pattern of hair bun called Khopa. Embellish it with hairpins and broaches.

Make-up

Make-up needs to be kept subtle, so don’t go overboard with your choices. Avoid the glossy look and opt for matte look. Highlight your eyes with a dark kohl and wear a light shade of lipstick and a hint of pink blush. You could skip the eye-shadow but if you are keen on getting your eyes right, just add a light shade of eye-shadow. The most important part of your make-up is bindi. The chandrakor bindi (half-moon) is the key to achieve and complete your Maharashtrian look.

Although men have limited choice, they are worth a try. Men can opt for a simple salwar-kurta or if you are open to experimenting, wear a dhoti. Typing a pheta (turban) is a must to get the traditional look right. Complete your look with a pair of Kolhapuri chappals. Well, ladies, now that you are well-guided, follow the above steps and you’ll definitely get ‘Waah chaan’ compliments for your efforts.
