National Mathematics Day 2019 will fall on Sunday, The first such observance took place, was in 2012, when the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced that December 22, will officially be celebrated as the National Mathematics Day.

It was during the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Srinivasa Ramanujan where PM Manmohan Singh said that the day would be celebrated as a mark of respect for the Indian maths genius.

Who Was Srinivasa Ramanujan?

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a genius when it came to mathematics. Despite having no formal training in the subject, Ramanujan aced the subject like he knew his back of the hand. He made immense contributions in Mathematics and solved equations that were considered next to impossible. 

Srinivasa Ramanujan's notable contributions include Landau–Ramanujan constant, Mock theta functions, Ramanujan conjecture, Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan–Soldner constant, Ramanujan theta function, Rogers–Ramanujan identities, Ramanujan's master theorem, and Ramanujan–Sato series among others. Notable mathematician GH Hardy once said, "Ramanujan had produced groundbreaking new theorems, including some that had defeated him and his colleagues completely."

Ramanujan was a wonder kid who did a world of good in the field of mathematics. However, he was only 32 when he breathed his last. The legacy he left behind is unmatchable and one-of-a-kind.
