Hantavirus Explained: Early Symptoms, How It Spreads and Why Doctors Warn It Can Turn Fatal Quickly

Hantavirus Infection is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease that spreads mainly through contact with infected rodent urine, saliva or droppings. While the infection is uncommon, doctors warn that it can rapidly become severe in some patients, especially when breathing complications develop.

Medical experts say hantavirus should not be compared directly to COVID-19 because the virus spreads very differently and does not easily transmit between humans in most cases. However, awareness about symptoms, transmission and prevention remains important as sporadic cases continue to raise concerns globally.

What Is Hantavirus and How Does It Spread?

Doctors explain that hantavirus is a zoonotic infection, meaning it spreads from animals to humans. Rodents infected with the virus can pass it through urine, droppings and saliva. Humans usually become infected after inhaling contaminated airborne particles, especially while cleaning enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Hantavirus Outbreak: Two Indian Crew Members From Virus-Hit MV Hondius Safe and Asymptomatic, Says Indian Embassy in Spain.

High-risk areas include storage rooms, abandoned buildings, farm sheds, cabins and poorly maintained food storage areas where rodents may be present. Experts warn that dry sweeping or vacuuming rodent waste can release infectious particles into the air and increase the risk of infection.

According to doctors, most hantavirus strains found in North America and several other regions do not spread easily between people. However, the Andes virus is considered an exception because rare person-to-person transmission has been documented through close contact. Hantavirus Outbreak Is Not Another COVID-19 Pandemic, Risk Remains Low: WHO .

Early Symptoms Can Feel Like Normal Viral Fever

One major challenge with hantavirus infection is that early symptoms are often mild and resemble flu-like illness.

Doctors say patients commonly experience:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Stomach discomfort

Symptoms usually appear within one to eight weeks after exposure, although most people begin showing signs within two to three weeks. Because the illness initially resembles common viral infections, many patients may not realise the disease is becoming serious.

When Does Hantavirus Become Dangerous?

Medical experts warn that some patients can suddenly deteriorate after the initial fever phase. Severe cases may develop into hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, a life-threatening condition affecting the lungs and heart.

Warning signs include:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest tightness
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Falling oxygen levels
  • Fluid build-up in the lungs

Doctors say aggressive strains such as the Sin Nombre virus and Andes virus may lead to severe lung complications in a large percentage of symptomatic patients. Many hospitalised individuals require oxygen support or ventilator treatment because breathing problems can worsen within hours.

Can Hantavirus Affect the Kidneys?

Apart from the lungs, hantavirus can also damage the kidneys, particularly in European and Asian variants of the disease.

Symptoms may include reduced urine output, swelling and abnormal kidney function tests. In severe situations, some patients may require dialysis if kidney function declines significantly. However, doctors note that not all patients develop serious kidney complications.

Why Early Treatment and Prevention Matter

There is currently no specific cure for hantavirus infection. Treatment mainly focuses on supportive care, including oxygen therapy, blood pressure management and organ support. Doctors stress that early hospital care can significantly improve survival chances.

Experts recommend the following preventive measures:

  • Avoid direct contact with rodents
  • Keep homes and workplaces clean
  • Store food properly
  • Use gloves, masks and disinfectants while cleaning rodent-infested areas
  • Avoid dry sweeping contaminated spaces

Doctors emphasise that hantavirus lacks the rapid airborne human transmission seen in respiratory pandemics. Still, recognising symptoms early and practising proper hygiene remain essential to reducing the risk of severe infection.
