Sa Ra Mahesh, state Tourism and Sericulture Minister, told The New Indian Express, "On Independence Day (August 15), we are selling the saris worth Rs 7,000 for Rs 4,000, and on Varamahalakshmi festival (August 24), the saris worth Rs 15,000 will be sold at Rs 4000. We are sacrificing our profits with the intention of reaching women who cannot afford to buy these." The minister added that they, however, cannot keep a track in case of resale of the saris.

According to them, Aadhaar cards will help keep middlemen away and ensure that the discounted saris reach the right customers. They have made it mandatory to produce Aadhaar card during the purchase of these saris as the same person will not be able to buy the same for the next five years from the same offer. The sale is only at selected stores in Karnataka.
