Hyderabad, January 29: A Hyderabad couple has captured the internet’s attention after spending nearly ₹15 lakh and navigating a complex six-month logistical journey to relocate their pet dog, Sky, from India to Australia. Facing stringent animal import regulations that prevent direct travel between the two countries, the couple opted for a multi-country transit plan to ensure their pet could join them in their new home.
The relocation process was triggered when the couple received an opportunity to move to Australia. However, they soon discovered that Australia does not permit the direct import of dogs from India, classified as a non-rabies-free country by Australian authorities. To bypass this, pets must first reside in a recognized rabies-free country for a mandatory six-month period before being allowed entry into Australia. Refusing to leave Sky behind or heed suggestions to adopt a new pet abroad, the couple arranged for him to stay in Dubai. The total expenditure for the relocation—including travel, boarding fees, and documentation—was estimated between ₹14 lakh and ₹16 lakh. "Money is replaceable, but love for him isn't," the couple shared in a viral social media post detailing their experience.
The journey involved significant emotional and logistical hurdles. The couple spent the first month in Dubai to help Sky acclimate to the new environment before they had to leave him in a specialized boarding facility. For the remaining five months, they remained in Australia, maintaining contact through daily video calls and updates from the facility staff.
Following the completion of the mandatory waiting period, Sky was finally flown to Australia to reunite with his owners. The couple described the six-month separation as one of the hardest challenges they had faced, but noted that the moment of reunion made the financial and emotional stress worthwhile.
