Cricket Australia who has been under fire lately with the whole ball-tampering saga in South Africa and the conduct of disgraced trio of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft today shocked the cricketing world by releasing a footage showing Indian skipper Virat Kohli tampering viciously with the ball using a ring. The footage Is reportedly from the fourth innings of the second test of the 2017 India and Australia test series in Bangalore which India won after bundling out the Aussies for 112 who needed 188 runs to win.
The one-minute video shows Kohli having a brief discussion with pacer Umesh Yadav and the star batsman then appears to rub the edges of the ball with his ring. It is interesting to note that Umesh Yadav later went on to claim the wicket of Steve Smith with a bowl that deviated quite a bit and this breakthrough played a crucial role in helping India level the series. James Sutherland, CEO of Cricket Australia has claimed that the Virat Kohli incident is a shocking reminder to everyone that the muck in the game has been for long and while he had the courage to ban his senior players, would the Indian board show the same boldness.
Some media houses in India have claimed that the ring used by Virat Kohli to cheat his way through the game was gifted to him by his wife Anushka Sharma. On previous occasions too, we have seen Virat with this ring on the field, but it seems there was more to the accessory than just being a lucky charm. Cricket experts have expressed their deep pain and anguish over the entire episode and have warned about the catastrophic impact of such incidents on the game of cricket. The Indian captain who has shown exemplary leadership skills and commitment to the cause of his team is known for his fair play and is not the one you would associate with such acts but the news seems to have done his reputation an unrepairable damage.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now gone into a huddle with senior members refusing to comment on the future of Virat Kohli. It will also be interesting to note if the Delhi batsmen is indeed axed then who gets the reign of Indian Team. A ban would most definitely mark the end of IPL 2018 for Virat Kohli which is a cruel blow for all his fans and his franchise. Our team contacted Virat’s representative for comments but to no avail. All eyes are now on the special meeting convened by the board and it will be safe to say future does look bleak for Virat Kohli.
