At least 170 sheep have died, and several others remain critically ill after consuming leftover food discarded near Rashtriya Prerna Sthal in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow, just four days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the site on December 25. According to Bhaskar English, the animals, owned by four shepherds from Fatehpur, reportedly fell sick after grazing in the area where uneaten lunch packets from the inauguration event had been dumped. Open waste pits at the site were allegedly left uncovered, allowing the sheep access to the food. Despite emergency veterinary care and attempts by shepherds to use traditional remedies, most of the animals could not be saved. Social activists and members of Helping Hand NGO visited the site and staged a protest, with NGO president Charu filing a complaint at Madiyanv police station.
