Francis Halzen Wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for IceCube Neutrino Observatory Discoveries
Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and discovering high-energy cosmic neutrinos. He was awarded the Nobel prize 'for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin'.
Belgian-American particle physicist Francis Halzen has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his visionary leadership in conceiving and developing the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole. By turning a cubic kilometre of deep Antarctic ice into a massive particle detector, Halzen enabled the landmark discovery of high-energy cosmic neutrinos, unlocking a profound new window for astronomers to peer into the universe's most violent and energetic phenomena. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 Winners: Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel Win Nobel Award for Optogenetics.
