Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won against hard-liner Saeed Jalili in Iran's presidential runoff election 2024. Supporters of Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon and longtime lawmaker, entered the streets of Tehran and other cities before dawn to celebrate as he defeated Jalili, a hard-line former nuclear negotiator. The snap elections were originally slated for 2025 but were brought forward after the unexpected death of ultraconservative president Ebrahim Raisi in a May helicopter crash.
