The Pentagon had announced earlier in the week that plea deals were in place, reportedly involving guilty pleas in exchange for removing the death penalty. On Friday, Austin relieved Susan Escallier, who had authority over the Pentagon's Guantanamo war court, of her role in the case and assumed the responsibility himself.
