WHO Says Viruses Or Variants Should Not Be Identified With Names of Countries, Recommends Use of Scientific Name
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday clarified that it does not identify viruses or variants with names of countries they are first reported from. The UN agency added that a proper scientific name of the virus should be used. The development came amid row over B.1.617 called as "Indian Variant" of COVID-19.
WHO recommends using the scientific name of COVID-19 variants, instead of their country of origin.
