IND vs NZ 2026: Will O'Rourke to Miss India Series; Targets Australia Tests Return
New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke is ruled out of the Blackcaps' extensive home series against India due to ongoing hamstring and calf rehabilitation. The primary focus is now on his full recovery and preparation for the challenging four-Test tour of Australia, scheduled from December 2026 to January 2027.
Blackcaps fast bowler Will O'Rourke has been officially ruled out of the highly anticipated multi-format home series against India as he continues to rehabilitate from hamstring and calf injuries. The 25-year-old’s absence is a precautionary measure, with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) prioritizing his full recovery ahead of the challenging four-Test tour of Australia in December and January. O'Rourke sustained a hamstring tear during the final Test against England in late June and subsequently strained his calf in a training session in late August. This latest setback follows a period on the sidelines due to a back stress fracture, from which he had only recently returned to international cricket.
Coach's Conservative Approach
Blackcaps coach Rob Walter confirmed the decision was made in consultation with O'Rourke and the medical team. "It's obviously disappointing for Will to have to miss such a marquee tour at home against India," Walter stated. "He was set to feature in both the ODI and Test series, but following subsequent discussions, we all agreed it was best for him to take some more time to rehabilitate both injuries and safely build up his bowling loads."
Walter emphasized the importance of a cautious approach given the packed schedule. "Our pace bowling resources will be critical over the next few months so we're taking a conservative approach to Will's return to ensure he's fully fit before he takes the field again," he added. The ultimate goal is for O'Rourke to return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, with a view to being fully prepared for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9.
