Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians Highlights And Cricket Score 24th Match - T20 Commentary

End of Over : 20.0 KXIP: 197/4

The pitch is a belter and Mumbai also have the resources in their batting to scale this target. Rohit Sharma is missing today and that's a blow but still the hosts will be banking on the likes of Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav to deliver the goods. We are expecting a cracking chase. Do join us in a short while.

Lokesh Rahul is up for an interview. Starts up by saying that he honestly thought the way they started they should have ended with 200 easily but the wickets in between stopped the run flow. Adds up that they are happy with the way they finished. States that the plan with Gayle was to play normal cricketing shots in the Powerplay and if they do that they would make good runs. Informs that he looked to take it deep so he could hit in the death overs but he delayed going after the bowlers by a couple of overs as Gayle and Miller got out in succession. Hopes that Ashwin and others can use the conditions well and if they get early wickets, they can win the game easily.

Mumbai were brilliant in the first four overs but then were equally poor in the next 8 overs or so. They did make a comeback of sorts after removing Gayle as a few wickets fell in a hurry but then KL Rahul took control and scored a scintillating hundred. The hosts completely lost the plot in the last three overs where they ended up conceding 54 runs. Rahul Chahar was the standout bowler for them as, amidst all the carnage, he bowled four economical overs.

That's a big total posted on the board by Punjab. Mumbai, though, will feel that it could have been even worse. After a quiet beginning, the pair of Gayle and Rahul exploded. They took the Mumbai bowlers to the cleaners and amassed runs at will. They put together a century stand in a very quick time and Punjab looked well on course for a total in excess of 200. A moment in the game when the Jamaican felt the heat and called the physio resulted in the visiting team losing some momentum as the West Indian got out immediately after that.

19.6 4

Jasprit Bumrah to Mandeep Singh. FOUR! Mandeep ends proceedings with a boundary. Back of a length delivery outside off, Mandeep stays back and slaps it through backward point for a boundary. 13 from the last over and 38 from the last two. Punjab finish on 197/4!

19.5 1

Jasprit Bumrah to Lokesh Rahul. That was quick! Wow! Another short one and on the body. Rahul is way too late in the pull shot. The ball hits him on the shoulder. He throws his bat straightaway but then realizes Agarwal has almost reached him. He then goes for a single. The fielder at point does not have a shy.

19.4 2

Jasprit Bumrah to Lokesh Rahul. Rahul smashes this towards long off. They take one, Rahul slips at the bowler's end but he still manages to complete the second. Brings up his ton. His maiden century in this league. What a knock this is. Just brilliant. He played second fiddle to Gayle but stayed out there and has accelerated when his team needed. Takes his helmet off and then soaks in all the applause by the crowd and his teammates.

18.6 2

Hardik Pandya to Mandeep Singh. Fine delivery, yet again but 25 runs off the over. A near yorker on middle, Mandeep keeps it out off the inner half to mid-wicket and rushes back for the second run. The throw from the deep was very poor, otherwise the second run could have been close.

17.3 W

The strategic break has been signaled! Mumbai have broken through the opening stand and probably just at the right time. 6 more overs to go, if Mumbai can manage to pull things back and somehow keep the visitors under 180, they would be the happier side heading into the break. Punjab, on the other hand, have Rahul, who is set out there, and with still a lot of batting to come, they would hope to end strongly. Hardik Pandya is back.

Punjab skipper, Ravichandran Ashwin, says they also wanted to bowl first due to the dew, however, the teams have defended well in the last two games over here. Informs they have two changes, one forced as Mayank Agarwal is out due to an injury and Karun Nair comes in for him and Hardus Viljoen replaces Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Mumbai skipper, Kieron Pollard, says they want to bowl first as the dew comes into play later on and the wicket also does not change a lot. Mentions Rohit is fine, it is just a precautionary change. Informs Siddhesh Lad, the local boy, is making his debut and he is excited for this game. Ends by saying that choosing between Malinga and Joseph was difficult but you can't drop Alzarri after his performance in the last game.

TOSS - Mumbai win the toss and elect to bowl first.

PITCH REPORT - Pommie Mbangwa says it is humid but it is quite pleasant. Mentions the good length areas are the areas which has worked for the bowlers here and that is where the bowlers should be looking to bowl early on. Further adds the short ball should also be a good option but you need to get it right. Ends by saying the wicket is a good one though and it is expected to be a high scoring encounter.

Big news - Rohit Sharma is not playing today as he suffered a right leg muscle spasm yesterday during training. Kieron Pollard is leading Mumbai today.

Warm welcome everyone for Match 24 of this edition's Indian T20 League between Mumbai and Punjab at the Wankhede Stadium. The hosts will have revenge on the menu as they got beaten comprehensively in the reverse fixture against the touring team. Post that, they have gathered a couple of wins and will be eyeing their third tonight in front of their home fans. Punjab, on the other hand, have fared decently this season and are placed third in the points table. Their players are finding form and consistency is something they will be striving for. We are expecting a cracking contest this evening.

End of Over : 20.0 MI: 198/7

That's all from this nail-biting contest. On Thursday, Rajasthan will get ready to host Chennai at 2000 IST (1430 GMT). Do join us for all the action. Cheers!

Man of the Match and the victorious Mumbai skipper, Kieron Pollard says this knock is right up there among the best. Dedicates his innings to his wife who is celebrating her birthday today. States he enjoys batting at Wankhede and promoted himself up the order to target the spinners. Further adds that he wanted to keep calm. Also says the wicket was a difficult one to bowl on and praises his bowlers for pulling things back but admits that they didn't end well. He is happy to end on the winning side. Ends by saying, Rohit is the captain of this team, he was rested for precautionary measures and he will gladly hand back the captaincy to him once Sharma returns.

Hardik Pandya, who is up for an interview as well, starts by crediting Pollard for the way he batted. On his own batting, Pandya mentions the situation demanded him to go from the first ball itself. Also adds that the way they recovered in the chase from a precarious situation and brought the equation down to 4 runs off 4 balls, he thought that the game was in the bag.

Ravichandran Ashwin says the injury to Ankit Rajpoot was a problem for them and getting three overs out of him in the Powerplay was a bonus. Reckons the total was just about par with the dew and adds that it's a tough ground to defend. Mentions they were good with the ball in bits and pieces but could not end it well. Also, says that Sam Curran was under the pump and it is not easy bowling against Pollard and hopes that he will learn from this experience. States there are a few positives like Rahul's batting and their bowling initially, however, they failed to close it well. Hopes that they can get back to winning ways at home. Ends by informing that Chris Gayle has twisted his back and they will have to check his condition.

Punjab will be disappointed with the outcome. They dominated for most parts during the run chase but failed to keep the same intensity in the end overs. Mohammed Shami (4-0-21-3) was exceptional but same cannot be said for the other bowlers. When put under pressure, they just fell apart and that cost them the game. Here is what Ravichandran Ashwin has to say...

Earlier, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle went berserk and set the platform for a big score for Punjab. They stuttered a bit but then courtesy Rahul's century they posted 197 runs on the board. Chasing a stiff target, Mumbai kept losing wickets at regular intervals and always appeared behind the 8-ball. Kieron Pollard, though, held one end tightly and then unleashed when it mattered the most. His stands first with Hardik Pandya and then with Alzarri Joseph were very crucial in this run chase. Pollard getting dismissed in the final over made things interesting but with 4 needed off 4 balls, Alzarri finished the job on the last ball along with Rahul Chahar.

What a humdinger! Phew! A last-ball thriller is what we all want to watch and that's what was served tonight. A chase which didn't go accordingly to the plan for Mumbai turned out to be quite close all thanks to Kieron Pollard. The West Indian promoted himself up the order and played one heck of a knock to achieve this victory.
