The surface is a real beauty for batting. Bangladesh will back themselves to get a big lead here but for that to happen they will have to bat well. Stay with us as their openers will be out soon to begin the home side's reply.

Anyway, Zimbabwe won't be too disappointed with their first innings total. It's true that they would have aimed something above 300 but Bangladesh bowled a lot better this morning to not let them achieve that target. Apart from Peter Moor, we saw Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams also playing vital knocks on Day 1. The rest of the batting unit didn't turn up much though. For Bangladesh, they sweat hard yesterday to get five wickets while today was a relatively easier task. Taijul Islam was the standout bowler with a 6-fer and he was supported nicely by his spin partners.

Right then, Zimbabwe didn't concede many runs this morning to pick the remaining five wickets. They gave away just 46 runs but it took them 26.3 overs to do that. Peter Moor and Regis Chakabva started watchfully and raised their 50-run stand but soon after that, the latter departed. Moor, however, continued to bat watchfully and didn't try to farm the strike. He could have adopted a different approach and it was a bit strange to watch him let go the strike so easily.

Mehidy Hasan gives an interview to Shamim Chowdhury. He says that they were looking for wickets on Day 1 but feels the pitch was very good for batting. Adds that they were not getting much help and their strategy was to keep it tidy. States that the surface today will be better and he hopes to get some turn.

Zimbabwe's head coach, Lalchand Rajput says that they have started this Test well and feels they should have lost one wicket less. He is still hopeful of getting a total around 300 runs. Informs that they had camps in Harare to practice playing spin and they are well prepared. Wishes that the second day also goes well for his team. Wants his boys to execute the plans well and signs off by saying that the first hour will be very crucial.

Pitch report - Ed Rainsford points out the marks on the pitch and tells it's very dry. He feels that the abrasive nature of the surface will assist the pacers too and it could be conducive for reverse swing.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen for the second day of the first Test match at this brand new venue for the longer format in Sylhet. We witnessed some excellent cricket on Day 1 where against the common notion, Zimbabwe batted bravely against the spinners and have got a good total on the board. Hamilton Masakadza, Sean Williams and then Peter Moor showed resolve and character in their approach and the latter is still unbeaten. The African team will wish that he continues and takes their total to somewhere near 350, if not more. The Bangla bowlers didn't get the kind of success which was expected from them but still by picking 5 wickets, they have done a decent job. It will be all about finishing the Zimbabwean innings as soon as possible. Let's see what happens today.

All the Bangladesh bowlers were decent but their persistence did not win them big dividends. While it is true that they are only a wicket away from getting into the tail, what is equally true is that if the visitors manage to add another 30-40 runs on Day 2 without losing a wicket, they will be in a good position to cross 300 and get to 325-350 which will then become a very good score on this track. A bit of a strange innings from Peter Moor though. One can understand that he wanted to take his time on a tricky pitch but it was by no means, one where you could score only at a strike rate of 30. He might want to increase that scoring rate come Sunday and steer his side past 300.

Sean Williams and Hamilton Masakadza were the heroes for their side. The captain took control with two early wickets down while the latter ensured that there was no collapse with decent partnerships in the middle order. He missed out on a century but that was more due to the superb catching by Mehidy Hasan.

Not quite sure who would be happy or unhappy at the moment. Zimbabwe would feel that they have won a good toss on a pitch which will degrade with each passing day, but then Bangladesh have not allowed them to run away with the game. They have been tight and disciplined and kept the run flow under check. A wicket quickly in the morning and they can still restrict the visitors under 260.

Yawn... it has been that sort of a session. 87 runs were scored, in 29 overs, for the loss of a wicket but the last hour was nothing less than attritional. When Williams fell, Zimbabwe were just beginning to accelerate - after he went, only 35 runs came in 87 balls.

The hosts had won the ODI series convincingly, but the African nation would be looking for some respite in the Test series and improve their performance. The match is happening at Sylhet International Stadium, becoming the 8th venue in Bangladesh hosting a Test. Brendan Taylor and Sean Williams are the experienced players for Zimbabwe, but they could not do much in the ODIs. Bangladesh will be missing the likes of Tamim and Shakib. Their strength is spin, so spinners should come into play. It is time that skipper Hamilton Masakadza performs according to the expectations set by the Zimbabwe team. A bit of rain is forecast but hopefully there will be no major delay during the course of the match.
