Posting your personal opinion on issues can cost you dearly at times! At least that what happened with Angela Williamson, who worked in government relations and public policy role at Cricket Australia. The sporting body told her she became untenable after she posted a series of tweets in favour of greater access to abortion.

According to the Tasmanian state government, Angela had insulted the government and thus was fired from the job. The case is currently under the review of the government’s Fair Work Commission. In a statement, Cricket Australia spokesperson said that it would be "inappropriate" to comment on Ms Williamson's circumstances. However, the body further added, “Cricket Australia respects an individual's right to their opinion. However, it expects that employees will refrain from making offensive comments that contravene the organisation's social media policy.

However, Williamson's lawyer Kamal Farouque said Ms Williamson should not have been sacked over the tweets. “She expressed a political opinion about an issue that was being debated in Parliament and in the public in Tasmania, and she lost her job because of it. We don't think any social media policy can stop the expression of people's political views. Farouque said Ms Williamson was seeking her job back and compensation for the loss suffered. She enjoyed the job at Cricket Australia. No-one should lose their job in these circumstances."

Cricket writer Geoff Lemon spoke about Cricket Australia’s list of scandals on social media. “Cricket Australia recap: David Peever & Kevin Roberts started an 8-month pay war with players. Darren Lehmann ran the Test team into the ground. Angela Williamson criticised government policy. One got promoted, one got a new term, one got a new job, one got sacked. Guess,” read his tweet.
