Rey Mysterio Likely To Retire From WWE in 2027, Farewell Tour Being Discussed: Reports

The iconic masked superstar, Rey Mysterio, could be calling time on his illustrious career in 2027, according to recent reports. Speculation is rife within WWE regarding the future of the 51-year-old Hall of Famer, with discussions reportedly underway for a possible retirement tour to honor his decades of contributions to professional wrestling. WWE Announces December 2026 Schedule for Australia and New Zealand Tour, Check Dates and Venues.

While an official announcement from Óscar Gutiérrez Rubio, better known as Rey Mysterio, is yet to be made, backstage chatter indicates that 2027 is being considered the year the legendary luchador might hang up his boots as an active competitor. Sources suggest that WWE has already begun brainstorming ideas on how to orchestrate a fitting farewell for 'The Master of the 619'.

Rey Mysterio's Current Status and Stance

Despite the retirement rumors, Mysterio continues to maintain a rigorous schedule. He is currently signed to WWE, performing on the Raw brand, and simultaneously serves as the on-screen General Manager for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA).

Just last month, in September 2026, Mysterio himself addressed the topic of retirement, stating he was "just going to wing it and see where this road takes me" and that he was "really enjoying the moments right now that I'm living inside the ring, whether as a wrestler or as a GM." This indicates that while 2027 is on WWE's radar, Mysterio is still taking his future one step at a time.

His recent in-ring activity underscores his dedication. As recently as Monday, October 19, 2026, Mysterio competed on Raw in a Triple Threat match for the Intercontinental Championship against Chad Gable and Dragon Lee, a match where Gable successfully retained his title. He also teamed with CM Punk and El Grande Americano against Dominik Mysterio, Omos, and JD McDonagh at WWE x AAA Worlds Collide 2026 in September.

The Road Ahead

Should Mysterio decide to step away from active competition in 2027, it is widely expected that he will continue to be involved with WWE and AAA in a non-wrestling capacity, similar to how other legends like AJ Styles have transitioned. This role would likely focus on nurturing the next generation of talent, ensuring his vast knowledge and experience are passed on.

As discussions continue behind the scenes, the wrestling world eagerly awaits official word on when and how this legendary career will ultimately conclude. For now, fans can continue to enjoy the high-flying exploits of Rey Mysterio, a true trailblazer in sports entertainment.
