The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has issued a comprehensive 15-page show-cause notice to three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat, citing 'grave acts of indiscipline' and anti-doping rule violations. Alongside the notice, the federation has declared the star wrestler ineligible to compete in any sanctioned events until at least 26 June 2026, effectively halting her anticipated return to the mat. Mandatory Notice Period Breach

The primary factor behind the immediate ineligibility ruling is an alleged breach of United World Wrestling (UWW) anti-doping regulations regarding retirement. The WFI stated that Phogat’s notification of her return to training, dated December 2025, failed to meet the mandatory six-month notice period required for athletes coming out of retirement.

Under international rules, athletes must be available for testing for half a year before becoming eligible for competition. Consequently, the WFI has ruled that she cannot participate in the Senior Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, which begins on Sunday, or any other domestic or international events until the notice period concludes in late June.

Allegations of Indiscipline and Misconduct

The show-cause notice outlines several charges against the Commonwealth Games gold medallist. The federation has accused Phogat of conduct that caused 'national embarrassment' and 'lasting damage' to the reputation of Indian wrestling.

Specific allegations include a series of 'whereabouts failures' under anti-doping rules and a breach of WFI constitutional provisions. The federation has also raised questions regarding her participation in two different weight categories during the selection trials held in March 2024. WFI President Sanjay Singh Welcomes Vinesh Phogat's Retirement Reversal Decision.

Fallout from Paris 2024

The notice further revisits the events of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg final after failing to make the weight. The WFI described the incident as a significant failure that resulted in the loss of an assured Olympic medal for the country.

Phogat, who announced her retirement shortly after the Olympic heartbreak before indicating a comeback late last year, now has 14 days to respond to the allegations. The WFI has confirmed that copies of the notice have been forwarded to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and United World Wrestling.
