Apple Sends Spyware Attack Alerts to Users in 110 Countries, Here’s What the Warning Means

What The Notification Says
Apple confirmed the update in a new support article on its website, stating that affected users will receive a direct alert on their iPhone lock screen through a push notification urging immediate action. The threat notification itself reads: "Apple detected a mercenary spyware attack targeted at your iPhone. There are actions you can take now to protect your data and device."
Apple also sends the same alert through email and displays it when a user logs into their Apple account. Researcher John Scott-Railton of Citizen Lab was the first to flag the new round of notifications, sharing details in a thread on X.
Why Experts Say It Matters
Security experts stress that receiving such a notification does not automatically confirm a device has been successfully hacked, but recipients are still advised to act quickly to secure their data. The notification directs users toward resources for help and recommends switching on Lockdown Mode, a security feature designed to make spyware intrusions significantly harder to pull off. Apple has said it has not yet identified a single case of a device being compromised by spyware while Lockdown Mode was active. Spyware attacks remain relatively rare overall, but the growing availability of surveillance technology in recent years has made it easier for governments to deploy such tools against journalists, activists, and other members of civil society.
Scott-Railton described the updated notifications as a "big improvement" over Apple's original spyware alert system, which was first introduced in 2021.
"Notifications create a critical signal that a community is being targeted. People get an alert, and then some of them reach out and seek help. Often this kicks off an investigation that reveals many, many more cases," Scott-Railton said.
He pointed to the ongoing controversy in Poland over the former government's alleged use of Pegasus spyware against political opponents as an example of the alerts' impact, noting that without Apple's notifications, "that entire massive scandal about spyware abuse in the Polish election wouldn't have been uncovered."
