Google has introduced an integrated credential-switching tool on Android that lets users migrate login credentials and passkeys directly between competing password managers, removing the long-standing need to export unencrypted data files. The update coordinates migrations directly at the operating system level, allowing users to move vaults between supported applications in just a few taps, making the process significantly more secure and convenient than before.
Eliminating the Security Risks of Plaintext Exports
For years, migrating credentials between password managers required users to export their entire vault into an unencrypted CSV file. That workflow posed substantial security hazards, as sensitive login data sat unencrypted in device storage until manually cleared. Passkeys presented an even larger barrier. Because modern public-key credentials could not be exported via standard plaintext spreadsheets, switching services routinely forced users to reset or re-enroll passkeys individually across dozens of online accounts.

How the In-App Transfer Works
The new migration flow initiates inside the destination password manager:
- Detection: A user selects the import option in their new manager, prompting Android to detect compatible vault apps installed on the device.
- Authentication: Android routes the request through system authentication, requiring screen-lock verification such as biometric confirmation or a PIN.
- Review and Approval: The source manager prompts the user to review the incoming request and authorise the handoff.
- Direct Transfer: Android transfers credentials and passkeys between the two apps within seconds, without writing unencrypted data to external storage.
Supported Platforms and Availability
At launch, the direct-transfer functionality works across four major services, including Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane.
The feature is deployed via Google Play Services and supports devices running Android 8.0 (Oreo) and above. Google has confirmed that additional third-party password managers will be integrated as developers implement the migration APIs.
