Astronomers have resolved a century-long mystery surrounding Betelgeuse, confirming through direct imaging that the famous red supergiant star is not alone. Using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, researchers have captured the clearest evidence yet of a binary companion orbiting the colossal star. The newly identified companion is also substantial, measuring 2.6 to 3.1 times more massive than the sun with a diameter 1.8 to two times greater. While Betelgeuse shines roughly 100,000 times brighter than the sun, its companion possesses a luminosity up to 92 times solar levels. The two celestial bodies are gravitationally bound, orbiting each other at a distance comparable to Saturn's orbital span from the sun.

A Century-Long Quest Realized

Scientists first hypothesized that Betelgeuse might have a companion roughly 100 years ago, primarily to help explain its fluctuating brightness. Previous research showed that the star's variable luminosity was driven by hot, dense material expelled into space that cooled into obscuring dust. However, direct confirmation remained elusive until now. Lead author Miguel Montargès of the Paris Observatory and the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Research in Astrophysics (LIRA) noted the significance of the findings published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

“Betelgeuse has been observed throughout history. It is even depicted in prehistoric paintings. Still, we discover one of its fundamental characteristics only now: it has a companion, and we obtained a direct image of this,” Montargès said. As a massive star, Betelgeuse is living a comparatively brief cosmic lifespan. At roughly 10 million years old - vastly younger than our 4.5-billion-year-old sun - it is currently in the final stages of its evolution and expected to eventually end in a supernova explosion. Previously, astronomers estimated that this explosion could occur anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 years from now. However, the confirmed presence of a companion introduces new variables into evolutionary models. “When it was considered a single star, it was believed that it would explode between 10,000 and 100,000 years from now. Now that we know that it has a companion that could be interacting with it, I must say that I don't know when it will explode,” Montargès said.

“If the two stars have interacted or will interact, it could delay or accelerate the supernova. We cannot be sure of anything anymore regarding this star,” he added.
