A Singaporean CEO of Indian origin who sued his ex-girlfriend to recover USD 370,000 he claimed were loans has lost the case in the Singapore High Court. Chander Agarwal, CEO of logistics company TCI Express, had taken Felicia Lee to court seeking to reclaim money he spent on her credit card bills, foreign trips, life insurance premiums and luxury gifts during their relationship, arguing the payments were loans rather than gifts. Lee countered that everything given to her was 'out of love and affection' and not a loan to be repaid, and the court sided with her.
What Agarwal Alleged
Agarwal told the court he paid USD 162,491 to cover Lee's credit card bills, according to a report by The Independent. He alleged he also spent USD 101,754 on foreign trips and USD 15,775 on her life insurance premium.

What The Court Said
Lee maintained that the gifts were given out of love, and the court, as reported by the BBC, agreed with her. 'The evidence before me clearly shows that the claimant, smitten by the defendant, had showered her with expensive gifts during their relationship,' the judge said.

The judge also observed that Agarwal was 'clearly a man of ample means who has expensive tastes,' noting that Lee 'was not in that league.'
Pointing to the lack of documentation despite a lengthy relationship, the judge said, 'It is incredible that for a relationship that lasted for more than a year with so many WhatsApp messages exchanged between them, the claimant could not point to any written evidence to support his case.'
In his written judgement, the judge quoted, 'Heav'n has no rage, like love to hatred turn'd, nor hell a fury, like a woman scorn'd,' before adding, 'This case shows that such emotion is not the sole province of one gender.'
How The Relationship Began
Agarwal, who is of Indian origin and heads the Singapore-based logistics firm TCI Express, reportedly met Lee, a former flight attendant, on a flight in 2019, after which the two entered a romantic relationship. He ended things in 2023 after suspecting her of infidelity.
He filed the lawsuit in March 2024, arguing the money and gifts were loans. The Singapore High Court dismissed the case this week.
