Starbucks Corporation is launching its first corporate technology office in India for fiscal year 2027 to advance a USD 2 billion cost-reduction initiative. The center aims to transition outsourced roles back in-house, reducing reliance on third-party vendors, amid a global restructuring that has eliminated over 2,000 corporate positions since early last year.
Starbucks Corporation has announced plans to establish a dedicated technology office in India, marking its first corporate facility in the country. The upcoming digital hub is scheduled to launch during the company's fiscal year 2027, which begins in October. Starbucks leadership confirmed that recruitment operations for the new facility will commence immediately after a specific office location is selected later this year. Starbucks Tech Strategy Shifts Back In-House
The establishment of the India hub signals an operational pivot under Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan, who intends to transition positions previously handled by external contractors back to internal staff. Starbucks had outsourced a significant volume of these technology roles during a previous corporate reorganisation.
According to internal communications sent to workers, the coffeehouse chain is specifically focused on reducing its reliance on external service providers. Varadarajan indicated that utilizing third-party technology vendors incurred considerable markups, and creating a multi-site structure would allow Starbucks to bypass intermediary costs entirely.
Global Technology Restructuring Metrics
The enterprise presently collaborates with tech vendors across various international locations, including India. Company spokespersons stated that managing these software and support roles in-house would build a significantly closer connection to the core engineering work and the technical teams delivering it.
The strategic shift follows separate workforce adjustments within the United States, where Starbucks recently reassigned 270 technology positions, representing roughly 20% of its domestic technology workforce, to a new operations facility located in Nashville.
