A former tech executive who made nearly UD 1 million last year at Google has resigned from his position, walking away from his high-paying corporate role due to concerns over job stability and a desire to build his own startup amid the artificial intelligence boom. Yousuf Imran, a former account executive, left the technology giant after four years to launch an independent venture, signaling a growing shift in tech industry workforce dynamics as generative AI accelerates.
Financial Motivations and Market Competition
During his final year at Google, Imran earned a total W-2 income of approximately USD 986,000, which included a base salary of USD 170,000 supplemented heavily by sales commissions. Despite the substantial compensation, Imran noted that the shifting landscape and massive equity packages offered by specialised AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic altered his perspective. Google Personalised Image Creation Now Free for Gemini Users in US.
"I earned nearly $1 million last year as an account executive at Google, but I felt some "FOMO" around the AI boom," Imran said. "I think most people at Google would tell you the same if they were being candid," he added. Imran observed that compensation structures at pure-play AI companies operate on a vastly different scale. "Google pays very well, but the equity packages at OpenAI and Anthropic are in a different universe. A three- or four-year stock grant at one of these companies can be life-changing money," he added.
Layoff Uncertainties Drive Career Pivot
Beyond financial incentives, ongoing corporate restructuring and successive rounds of layoffs at Google introduced unexpected career anxieties. The vulnerability of even highly skilled personnel influenced Imran's decision to leave corporate tech and pursue entrepreneurship. "I also thought about my job security at Google, given the company's layoffs in prior years. What struck me about the recent layoff rounds at Google was that they hit genuinely talented people. The uncertainty of a potential layoff was another input into my decision to bet on myself," Imran explained.
Who Is Yousuf Imran?
Yousuf Imran is an experienced sales leader and technology executive who specialized in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning solutions during his corporate career. According to his professional background, he immigrated to New York from Bangladesh at the age of five and grew up in Queens, later spending two decades working in quota-carrying sales roles at major tech organizations. Prior to his four-year tenure at Google, where he joined in 2020 to help enterprise clients adopt machine learning tools, Imran built an extensive background in tech sales management, a field he chose because he believed results were driven primarily by individual capability and work ethic rather than formal credentials.
Reflecting on his journey, Imran highlighted his background as a core motivator. "I think part of my success came from what I call the immigrant hustle. My family moved to New York when I was five years old from Bangladesh, and I grew up believing that if you don't put in the work, you won't get results," he said.
Launching Mangosteen Studio
Following his departure, Imran established Mangosteen Studio, an AI product lab focused on developing specialized sales software tailored for corporate account executives. To ensure operational stability, Imran self-funded the venture with USD 200,000 in business capital to cover two years of operations, alongside a USD 150,000 personal reserve for living expenses, opting to remain a solo founder without external venture capital for as long as possible. "The thesis is simple: I spent 20 years quota-carrying at some of the biggest companies, so I'm building the tools I wish I'd had," Imran stated. Google Reportedly Limits Meta's Access to Gemini AI Models, Delaying Internal AI Projects.
Acknowledging the inherent risks of stepping away from a stable executive path, Imran expressed confidence in the transition. "Ultimately, I recognized that leaving Google meant leaving a lot of things behind, both financially and professionally. But my confidence and domain expertise made me feel like this was the right moment to take the risk," he concluded.
