A 26-year-old former teacher has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison at Lincoln Crown Court in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to five charges of s*xual activity with a teenage pupil. She was sentenced after she admitted to having s*x with the teenage boy. Emily Drury, of Mablethorpe, was handed the sentence following her guilty plea to charges including penetrative and non-penetrative s*xual activity with the minor.
Court Proceedings and Mitigation
During the sentencing hearing, a victim impact statement written by the boy was read to the court, detailing the severe emotional toll of the abuse, reports the BBC. The victim stated that the experience left him feeling "unable to simply enjoy being a child" and that he "still lives with the consequences every day". The teenager also expressed initial concerns about coming forward due to social stigmas surrounding male victims of abuse by female figures in authority. In mitigation, barrister Jeremy James described Drury's offending as an "uncharacteristic, fantastical relationship" undertaken as a way of "escaping the reality of her life".
However, Judge James House KC noted that Drury had "failed to fully accept the magnitude of harm caused" to the boy. While acknowledging character references that highlighted her "kindness and compassion", the judge stated that the offences stemmed from a place of "her own selfish desires". Police Statement and Orders
Speaking after the sentencing, Det. Con. Julie Jode of Lincolnshire Police commended the victim for showing "exceptional courage, dignity, and resilience" throughout the investigation. Jode criticised the defendant for exploiting her position, stating: "As an adult in a position of authority, she was expected to provide guidance, support, and protection. Instead, she used that position to target and manipulate someone who should have been able to trust her implicitly". Alongside her prison sentence, Drury was issued a s*xual harm prevention order and a five-year restraining order, and was placed on the s*x offenders' register.
