A painting bought for just USD 30 (INR 2,800) at a Michigan estate sale has sold for USD 1,352,600 (around INR 13 Crore) at auction, after it was identified as a long-lost work by celebrated Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie. Titled 'Alderman Merriam's Shells' and painted in 1951, the artwork was sold by Freeman's auction house in New York, which said the price set a new world auction record for Abercrombie and made it the first of her works to cross the USD 1 million mark, CBS News reported. The figure includes the buyer's premium, and it landed far above the original pre-sale estimate of USD 15,000 to USD 250,000.

The painting had been missing from public view for more than 70 years before it resurfaced in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in a way few art lovers could have predicted.

How A Vinyl Hunt Led To A Million-Dollar Find

A collector went to an estate sale in Kalamazoo looking for vinyl records, not art. Something about the painting caught his eye, and when he turned it over, he spotted the name Abercrombie written on the back. He paid USD 30 for it and took it home. Bear Attack in US: Viral Video Shows Man Fending Off Charging Animal With Bear Spray Near Lake Tahoe Home.

From Medical Bill To Missing Masterpiece

The trail of ownership explains how the work stayed hidden for so long. Abercrombie reportedly gave the painting in 1952 to Dr John T Reynolds, a doctor in Kalamazoo, in exchange for medical treatment. Before that, it had been shown at exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Milwaukee and Evanston between 1952 and 1953, after which it vanished from the public eye. The estate sale belonged to Dr Reynolds' estate, which means the painting stayed within the same family collection for decades without its significance being widely recognised. Viral Video Shows Fisherman Walking Away Safely As Bison Approaches From Behind at Yellowstone National Park.

What Makes The Artwork Special

The painting shows a cluster of seashells set against a dark background, with one shell appearing to float in an almost completely black space. Art experts say the unusual lighting and surreal touches reflect an important phase in Abercrombie's artistic development. It is also believed to contain the first appearance of the cracked seashell motif that later became a recurring feature of her work. Ahead of the sale, the painting was restored by Chicago-based Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration.

Who Was Gertrude Abercrombie?

Abercrombie was a key figure in Chicago's art and music communities. She lived in Hyde Park, was closely tied to the city's jazz scene, and died in 1977. Her latest sale has turned a USD 30 thrift find into one of the most valuable works ever sold by the Chicago artist.
