Fire Breaks Out During Fireworks Show
Video footage captured a plume of black smoke emerging from one section of the Brooklyn Bridge while fireworks continued to launch and burst above the structure. Two other sections also appeared to catch fire during the pyrotechnic display.
A reporter at the scene observed that all of the fires burned out within approximately one minute. Authorities have not yet said what caused the fires or whether the incident affected the bridge's structural integrity.
Nearing Khoula, 24, from France, who was watching the fireworks from the Brooklyn waterfront, said: "At first I thought it was supposed to happen but then I was scared it would exploded. I thought the bridge was made of wood so I was scared."
She added: "There were four at the same time. Some extra fireworks exploded due to the fire." Mohamed Shaban, 31, of Egypt, also witnessed the incident. "It started as a small fire and got bigger. There was too much black smoke," he said.
Officials have not released information on the extent of any damage to the Brooklyn Bridge. The cause of the fires has not been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether the pyrotechnics used during the Macy's Independence Day celebration were directly responsible.
