Before the wild animal could reach the child, the family’s husky mix, Bella, bolted into action. Throwing herself directly between the bear and the boy, the dog confronted the intruder and successfully chased it off the property. The quick distraction gave Colton just enough time to turn and run to safety. Reflecting on the tense moments captured by the security camera, homeowner Jeffrey Tazzara noted how quickly the situation unfolded. "You're always wondering in the back of your head, 'What's gonna happen if she needs to protect us?' And now we know," Tazzara said in an interview.
Aftermath and Recognition
Following the encounter, the family thoroughly checked the dog for any injuries. To their relief, Bella emerged completely unharmed. "I checked her over, head to paw, and not a scratch on her — just a big smile and a wagging tail," Tazzara said. As a token of appreciation for her heroic intervention, the loyal pet was promptly rewarded with a well-deserved T-bone steak. Bella the Husky Honoured by Local Politicians
On July 17, Bella was honoured for her action by local politicians who praised her for "incredible bravery" in chasing down the black bear. "Today I had the honor to join State Sen. Stephen Harding in presenting a legislative honor to Bella the Husky, for protecting the [Tazzara] family from a bear attack earlier this month," state Rep. Joe Canino of Torrington wrote in a Facebook post on Friday. "Bella was rewarded for her bravery with a legislative citation, and some treats!" he added.
Meanwhile, State Sen. Stephen Harding also praised Bella. "Stories like hers remind us of the remarkable bond between families and their pets and the incredible acts of heroism that can happen in our own communities." he said in a Facebook post. "Congratulations, Bella, on this well-deserved recognition. Connecticut is proud to call you one very good dog!” Harding said.
Wildlife encounters involving black bears are not entirely uncommon in parts of Connecticut, particularly as residential neighbourhoods intersect with natural habitats. However, experts continue to remind residents to remain vigilant and secure garbage or food sources that might attract wildlife close to homes. Following her courageous act, Bella has received local honors and recognition for saving the young boy from potential harm.
