US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new rendering of a limited-edition commemorative US passport featuring his own likeness, designed to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence. Sharing a mock-up of the travel document on Friday via his Truth Social platform, Trump paired the image with the caption, “The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, 'Welcome, but be good!'” The design showcases a portrait of the president set against historical imagery, signaling a highly personalized branding approach for the country's upcoming semi-quincentennial celebrations.
The New Passport Design
The rendering posted by Trump features a stern-faced portrait of the president leaning over the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, superimposed on the background text of the original Declaration of Independence, alongside his signature at the bottom. The opposite page displays a copy of John Trumbull’s famous painting, The Declaration of Independence, depicting the founding fathers signing the historic document in 1776, under the header "United States of America 250." While the White House concurrently posted the design under the title "PATRIOT PASSPORT," news agencies noted that the image shared by Trump differs from initial conceptual mock-ups circulated by the U.S. State Department earlier this spring. The official State Department design previously indicated a different portrait of the president surrounded by the U.S. flag and the Declaration of Independence text rendered with a gold signature.
Availability and Scope
First announced in April, the commemorative travel documents are part of the broader "America250" and "Freedom 250" initiatives led by the administration to celebrate 250 years of American independence. Gavin Newsom Mocks Donald Trump’s ‘Patriot Passport’ Design With Parody Driver’s License.
According to State Department officials, the custom-art passports are scheduled to become available on July 6, 2026. However, their distribution will be strictly limited. An official clarified that the special documents are slated to be the default issue only for citizens applying or renewing in person at the Washington Passport Agency "for as long as there is availability." Standard online renewals and other regional agencies will continue to issue the standard U.S. passport design.
Broader Administration Branding
The introduction of the commemorative passport aligns with other efforts by the current administration to incorporate the president’s name and image onto official government property and initiatives.
The U.S. Mint is reportedly planning the release of a commemorative gold coin also bearing Trump’s likeness. Over the past year, the administration has similarly applied the president's name to a variety of federal programs, including a visa program for foreign investors, select government buildings, and a federal prescription drug website.
The State Department has not yet provided a final confirmation on whether the image posted by the president on Friday represents the final production design or an alternate conceptual rendering.
