Former US Army Soldier Sentenced to Life in Prison for S*xual Abuse, Including Choking and Beating 2 Minors

Former US Army soldier Adam Schlueter, 40, of Atlanta, was sentenced to life in prison and lifetime supervised release for physically and s*xually assaulting two minors under the age of 10. According to evidence presented at trial, Schlueter was stationed in Grafenwöhr, Germany, while in the army from 2009 until 2013. During his time in Germany,  Schlueter physically, emotionally, and s*xually abused two minor victims.

During trial testimony, both minors said that they were choked and beaten by Schlueter, among other forms of egregious physical abuse. One minor, who was eight, described being pushed through a second-story window and being dangled above the ground. It was found that Schlueter also employed threats to prevent his victims and other witnesses from disclosing the abuse to authorities. He even went on to threaten to kill one witness. He was convicted on April 20 by a federal jury in the Northern District of Georgia.

Department of Justice and Law Enforcement Statements

"Adam Schlueter betrayed the honour and duty that comes with serving in the U.S. military," said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division. “There is nothing honourable about subjecting the most vulnerable in our community to violence and s*xual exploitation. We are grateful for the strength and courage of the survivors in this case who came forward to end this man’s reign of terror," Duva added.

US Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg for the Northern District of Georgia said, "Through his years of sickening abuse, Schlueter betrayed the uniform of the U.S. Army and inflicted unimaginable harm on defenseless children". Hertzberg further said that today’s sentence underscores that they always stand ready to vindicate the victims of such crimes and ensure justice is served.

Speaking about the sentencing, Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham of the FBI Atlanta Field Office said, "Schlueter’s horrific abuse inflicted lasting trauma on children who should have been protected from harm." He also said that the FBI will continue to pursue those who prey upon children and hold them accountable for their crimes.

Project Safe Childhood Initiative

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Atlanta Field Office. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Leanne Marek and Matthew R. LaGrone along with Trial Attorney McKenzie Hightower from the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), with additional support and coordination provided by CEOS Trial Attorney Kaylynn Foulon. This prosecution was conducted under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative established in May 2006 to address child s*xual exploitation and abuse. Directed by U.S. Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), the program integrates federal, state, and local resources to track down and prosecute offenders while locating and safeguarding victims.
