Hurricane Marie is expected to remain offshore as it moves northwest away from Southern California, but its swells are bringing dangerous surf, strong rip currents and coastal flooding through Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued multiple coastal advisories, while rain and possible thunderstorms are forecast for Los Angeles County on Sunday.
Southern California will continue to feel the effects of Hurricane Marie churning offshore in the Pacific into next week, the National Weather Service predicts. Although Hurricane Marie isn’t forecast to make landfall, its effects will be felt across the Eastern Pacific, from southwest Mexico to Southern California. The effects include rain, coastal flooding, potentially deadly rip tides, and 5 to 10-foot waves whomping SoCal beaches.
The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory, a high surf advisory, a small craft advisory and a beach hazards statement for Southern California through Tuesday, September 8. “There is an increased risk for ocean drowning,” the NWS forecast warns. “Rip currents will be widespread and very strong, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore. Enhanced beach erosion will occur. Flooding of seawater is likely, around the time of high tide, over vulnerable low-lying coastal areas such as parking lots, beaches, and walkways. Areas most susceptible to coastal flooding will include Avalon, Long Beach (Alamitos Peninsula), and Oxnard to Malibu (including Point Mugu).”
Rain is forecast for Los Angeles County early Sunday morning, September 6, with the possibility of thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Labor Day is forecast for sunny weather with a high near 88 degrees. The National Hurricane Center predicts that Hurricane Marie, which is currently sitting off the coast of Baja California, will move to the northwest and away from Southern California in the coming days. People are advised to avoid local beaches during the typically busy Labor Day weekend.
“Steady weakening is expected for the next several days, and Marie is forecast to become a post-tropical remnant low on Wednesday,” the National Hurricane Center forecast reads. “Swells generated by Marie will continue to affect portions of the coast of southwest Mexico, the Baja California Peninsula, and Southern California for the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”
