Tropical Storm Dolly Forms In Atlantic
Dolly formed shortly before 11 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was moving rapidly toward the west over the central Atlantic.
The system was packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, just above the threshold required for tropical-storm classification. The National Hurricane Center said Dolly was not expected to change much in strength during its first 48 hours.
Dolly Forecast To Weaken Before Leeward Islands
Dolly is forecast to "degenerate into a tropical wave before it reaches the Leeward Islands," likely on Saturday. Despite the expected weakening, the system could still bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Leeward Islands through Sunday.
The Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola could also face heavy rain and flash-flood risks through Monday, according to the forecast. At present, Dolly is far from land and no direct US mainland threat is indicated by the current forecast.
