The incident took place on June 13 after a neighbour called 911 to report a woman allegedly screaming inside an apartment. According to reports, the woman, later identified as Marie Marseille, was celebrating the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years with her dog, Jameson.
In the footage released by LAPD on June 20, officers can be heard asking Marseille to secure the dog, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever-Saint Bernard-Poodle mix wearing a Knicks jersey. After she briefly closed the door, one officer was heard saying, "I ain't getting bit by that, bro," while another remarked, "That's a big a** dog." Moments later, Marseille reopened the door and told officers, "He's not aggressive." However, Jameson emerged from the apartment, barking and running toward one of the officers. "No, no, nooooo," Marseille screamed as the shooting unfolded.
The incident quickly drew backlash on social media, prompting LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell to describe the shooting as "incredibly tragic." In a statement, McDonnell said the loss of a pet is deeply personal and confirmed that the department's policies, training and officers' actions would be reviewed as part of an ongoing investigation.
Marseille later told media outlets that she was not screaming in distress but shouting with joy while celebrating the Knicks' historic title win.
