Several United States military aircraft, including drones, fighter jets and helicopters, have been reportedly shot down or damaged during the ongoing 2026 Iran conflict, according to visual evidence and official statements from involved parties. The reported incidents, largely attributed to Iranian air defence systems and allied militia activity, mark a notable escalation in aerial losses for the US in the region.

Drone Losses Form Bulk of Incidents

A significant number of losses involve the US-made General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper drones, widely used for surveillance and strike missions. Multiple Reapers were reported shot down across various Iranian provinces including Isfahan, Bushehr, Shiraz and Kerman throughout March.

US officials cited in reports indicated that at least a dozen MQ-9 drones were lost during the conflict, with the majority attributed to Iranian air defence fire. Some drones were also downed by Iran-backed militia groups operating in Iraq. These incidents have been supported by video footage and images circulating online, showing wreckage at different crash sites. Fighter Jet and Combat Aircraft Incidents

Beyond drones, April saw a shift with reports of manned US aircraft being targeted. On April 3, a McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle was reportedly shot down over western Iran. According to available information, the pilot was rescued, while search efforts continued for the weapon systems officer.

On the same day, a Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II was also shot down. The pilot ejected over the Persian Gulf and was recovered.

Additionally, a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II was reported damaged by ground fire in March, forcing an emergency landing at a regional US base. While the aircraft was not destroyed, officials indicated it may remain out of service for an extended period.

Helicopters and Support Aircraft Hit

US rotary and support aircraft have also been affected. Reports indicate that Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were struck during search-and-rescue operations linked to the downed F-15 incident. Separately, a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter was destroyed on the ground in Kuwait following a drone strike attributed to Iranian forces.

In another major incident, a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker crash over Iraq resulted in the deaths of crew members, though this was linked to a refuelling accident rather than direct enemy fire. Other KC-135 aircraft were reported damaged in missile strikes on regional bases.
