A Meteor Fireball stunned residents across the Northeastern United States on Tuesday afternoon, producing a rare and dramatic daylight spectacle. According to NASA and the American Meteor Society, the bright streak was visible across multiple states, catching the attention of hundreds of eyewitnesses who reported flashes, glowing trails, and even green fragments moving rapidly across the sky.
NASA confirmed that the meteor first appeared at approximately 2:34 p.m. on April 7, around 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean near Mastic Beach on Long Island. Traveling at an estimated speed of 30,000 mph, the fireball covered about 117 miles through the upper atmosphere before disintegrating roughly 27 miles above Galloway, New Jersey, just north of Atlantic City. Its southwest trajectory and intense brightness made it visible even in broad daylight, a relatively uncommon occurrence for meteor events. The American Meteor Society received 186 reports of the fireball within hours, including a significant number from New Jersey. Witnesses described seeing vivid green-colored fragments streaking across the sky for several seconds, adding to the spectacle’s intensity. Sightings were reported from Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, highlighting the wide visibility of the event. Despite the widespread reports, officials have not yet confirmed whether any meteorite fragments reached the ground or caused damage. Scientists continue to analyze data to determine the meteor’s composition and breakup pattern.
Daytime fireballs like this are rare due to the brightness of the sun, making this event particularly notable. Experts say such occurrences offer valuable insights into meteoroid behavior as they enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds.
