Judge Sarah A. Castle accepted the guilty plea after determining Thomas entered it voluntarily and without a mental disease or defect defence. Thomas was remanded to sheriff’s custody pending transfer to the Missouri Department of Corrections and ordered to pay USD 68 to the state’s Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund, with all other court costs waived.

Police responded to a Kansas City home around 1:30 PM on February 9, 2024, following a report of an unresponsive infant. First responders found 1-month-old Za'riah Thomas dead at the scene with severe burns. According to probable cause statements and investigator notes, Thomas stated she intended to put the infant down for a nap. A family member later told detectives Thomas remarked: "I thought I put [her] in her crib and I accidentally put her in the oven."
