Boat Capsizes Near Liberty Island
The incident happened in the waters off Liberty Island, close to the Statue of Liberty, at about 10:27 p.m. on Saturday, August 8. According to reports, the vessel was a 22-foot bowrider motorboat carrying 14 people when it overturned. Emergency crews were dispatched after reports that multiple people had entered the water.
The FDNY said, “NYPD divers rescued people from water. Two civilian patients in critical condition transported to NYU Langone Health Brooklyn,” said the FDNY. “Twelve civilian patients with minor injuries were transported to area hospitals.”
Woman, Baby Die in Hospital
The two people initially reported in critical condition were a woman and a 5-month-old baby. Both were transported to NYU Langone Health Brooklyn, where they later died, according to local reports. ABC7 New York reported that the woman was 27 years old.
Their identities have not been publicly disclosed. The other 12 people rescued from the water suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospitals in the area, according to the FDNY.
The FDNY and NYPD responded to the scene along with Harbor, Scuba and Aviation units. NYPD divers were involved in rescuing people from the water, while emergency personnel treated and transported injured passengers.
Images published by local media showed injured people being taken away on stretchers, while other survivors were seen returning to the dock following the incident.
Coast Guard Investigating Cause
The cause of the capsizing has not been established. The U.S. Coast Guard told CNN that investigators will interview the boat's captain as part of the ongoing investigation into what caused the vessel to overturn.
