An Indian-origin woman and her Nepali-American friend were crushed to death by an approaching train at a subway station in New York, reportedly after one of them fell onto the tracks and the other jumped down to help.

The victims, both 24, were identified as Malaika Chitre, a resident of Dayton, New Jersey, and Navam Kaul of Sayreville, New Jersey, according to the New York Daily News. Both had attended Rutgers University together.

A disturbing video of the incident has surfaced online, purportedly showing Chitre laughing and pulling Kaul towards her moments before an approaching train runs over them at the Spring Street subway station in Lower Manhattan. It remains unclear who fell onto the tracks first. According to the New York Daily News, the bodies of Chitre and Kaul were recovered from underneath the third and fourth cars of the train.

The New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, reported that Kaul may have fallen onto the tracks first or entered the tracks inside the Spring Street station, prompting Chitre to go down to help him.

Police said they were alerted to the incident at around 3:14 am on Sunday after the train was unable to stop in time. About Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul

According to the New York Daily News, Kaul attended Rutgers Business School in New Brunswick from fall 2020 to spring 2024 but did not receive a degree. Chitre graduated from Rutgers-New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Science degree in May 2024.

Their LinkedIn profiles showed that Chitre worked as an operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals, while Kaul worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg.

"We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of these two former students," said Dory Devlin, assistant vice president of news and media relations at Rutgers.
