‘That’s a Lot of Kids’: California Surrogate Discovers Baby’s Father Is Chinese Billionaire Xu Bo

A California woman who agreed to become a surrogate for USD 120,000 says she was shocked to discover that the baby she is carrying is allegedly for Chinese gaming billionaire Xu Bo, a reclusive businessman who has reportedly fathered more than 100 children through surrogacy in the US.

The woman, identified by CBS News as “Judy” to protect her identity, said the surrogacy agency did not initially provide enough information about the intended father. She also said she has repeatedly tried to meet Xu but has not been able to do so.

“The agency should’ve been very transparent from before getting matched … about who it is that you’re having a baby for and what the family is,” she told CBS News.

Her account is among the first public accounts from a surrogate reportedly carrying a child for Xu, whose alleged plans for a large family have attracted growing attention online and in US media.

California Woman Says She Found Out Dozens Of Surrogates Were Carrying His Babies

Judy said her journey began after she saw an Instagram advertisement offering USD 120,000 to become a surrogate. As a single mother raising a seven-year-old daughter, she viewed the opportunity as a way to improve their financial situation.

“I wanted to build a better life for me and my daughter,” she said.

She eventually signed an agreement with Patriot Conceptions. According to Judy, the agency described the intended parent as a single father who wanted to expand his family.

However, when she asked how many other surrogates were carrying babies for the same man, she said she was told the number was close to two dozen.

“I can’t be exact, but I know it was a large number and I just kind of sat with that information thinking, ‘You know, that’s a lot,’” Judy said. “That’s a lot of kids at one time.”

Despite her concerns, Judy said she felt committed to continuing with the pregnancy after signing the contract. She also said friends and relatives encouraged her to proceed.

Xu Bo, 48, is the founder of Chinese online gaming company Duoyi. He has been described in reports as a reclusive billionaire and has reportedly referred to himself as “China’s first father.”

According to reports cited by The Wall Street Journal, Xu has expressed a desire to have at least “50 high-quality sons.” His company has also reportedly posted on social media that he has fathered more than 100 children through US surrogacy.

However, the exact number of children Xu has fathered remains disputed.

His former partner, Tang Jing, has claimed on Chinese social media that Xu has fathered more than 300 children, including 11 whom she said she raised for several years. The pair are currently involved in a custody dispute involving two daughters they share.

Viral Video Shows Dozens Of Boys Calling Xu 'Daddy'

Adding to the intrigue surrounding Xu's alleged family plans, a video posted in 2022 by an account linked to him reportedly showed dozens of young boys inside a mansion.

According to reports, the accompanying caption asked: “Imagine a bunch of babies rushing towards you—how does that feel?” It added, “Take a look. Besides your loved one, what’s cuter than children?”

The footage has since become part of the wider discussion surrounding Xu's reported use of US surrogacy agencies.

Xu Bo Reportedly Wanted Sons To Build Business Dynasty

Reports have also highlighted Xu's alleged ambition to create a large family dynasty. His reported interest in having sons has drawn particular attention, with claims that he believes male children could eventually help take over his business.

During a California court proceeding in 2023, Xu reportedly sought parental rights involving several unborn children as well as children he had paid for through surrogacy.

The judge held a confidential hearing, during which Xu reportedly said he hoped to have 20 or more US-born children, specifically boys, whom he wanted to eventually take over his business.

Several of his children have reportedly lived in a home in Irvine, California, where nannies cared for them.

Xu reportedly told the judge that he had not yet met some of the children because of his work commitments, but planned to eventually take them to China.

The judge rejected his petition for parental rights, reportedly leaving the unborn children in a complicated legal situation.

Why The Surrogacy Case Is Drawing Attention

Judy's account has raised questions about how much information prospective surrogates are given about intended parents before entering agreements.

“It leaves me wondering: do I even have a right to know?” she said.

Her comments have also brought renewed attention to the US surrogacy industry and the growing use of American surrogacy arrangements by wealthy international clients.

The allegations surrounding Xu's number of children, his family plans and the circumstances of individual surrogacy arrangements remain subject to conflicting accounts. Xu's representatives have disputed some of the claims made about him.
