McHenry is not taking over as the State Department's official spokesperson, a position currently held by Tommy Pigott, who has served in the role since April 2026 and is responsible for communicating the department's foreign policy positions to the media. McHenry will instead work as a press advisor, drawing on her background as a television journalist, commentator and political media personality.

Who Is Britt McHenry
Brittany May 'Britt' McHenry began her journalism career in the Washington, DC area after graduating from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She worked for WJLA-TV, ABC's Washington affiliate, and NewsChannel 8, before briefly serving as a dugout reporter for Fox Sports San Diego, then returned to Washington television. Her biggest break came in 2014 when she joined ESPN as a Washington-based correspondent, appearing across major programmes including SportsCenter, Outside the Lines, NFL Live and Baseball Tonight. She left ESPN in 2017 as part of a major round of layoffs at the network, after which she moved further into political and opinion broadcasting, becoming a contributor to Fox News and a frequent guest on conservative media programmes.
McHenry's career has also included controversy. In 2019, she accused Fox News and former co-host George Murdoch, known professionally as Tyrus, of s*xual harassment, later filing a lawsuit against the network and Murdoch following an internal investigation. In 2020, McHenry revealed she had been diagnosed with a brain tumour and subsequently underwent surgery.
